EUGENIA

EUGENIA

A custom display typeface inspired by the hand-painted signage of Nyboder, a historic district in Copenhagen. With its tall, narrow proportions and high-waisted forms, Eugenia expresses the elegant yet structured femininity found in Nyboder’s architectural character and visual identity.

Research

Research

We began by studying the letterforms and brushwork of Nyboder’s historic signage, paying close attention to the rhythm, spacing, and distinct vertical proportions. Our research drew from Scandinavian design traditions, exploring how heritage typography could be reinterpreted for modern use.

Design

Design

Our design process focused on creating tension between delicacy and discipline. The narrow glyphs and high waistlines were balanced by subtle curves and softened terminals, reflecting the elegance and restraint of hand-painted type while maintaining a contemporary edge.

Development

Development

We refined the typeface through multiple iterations, testing weight, spacing, and alignment for legibility and consistency. Translating hand-painted details into a digital form required careful calibration to preserve the tactile quality of brush lettering within a functional type system.
