BUMPIN '25

A visual identity for a 2010s-inspired music festival that reimagines “recession pop” through a calm-yet-energetic lens. The outcome includes a full brand system—posters, tickets, billboards, merchandise, venue maps, and digital platforms—designed to capture the contrast between the chaotic energy of the music and a sleek, minimal visual presence.

Research

Research

We explored the cultural impact of the Great Recession on music, focusing on how young adults used upbeat, high-energy pop as a form of escape and hope. Our research extended to visual inspirations from sound wave boards with sand (cymatics), where vibrations form shifting patterns—this became a metaphor for how music both shapes and grounds emotional experience.

Design

Design

The visual system was built on strict rules—Helvetica type, a black/white/teal palette, and layered patterns with a 2:1 weight ratio. Patterns were directly inspired by soundboard sand formations, bringing rhythm and resonance into static graphics. This approach created cohesion across mediums while reflecting the pulse and texture of music itself.

We developed applications of the system across multiple touchpoints, from traditional print (posters, tickets, billboards) to merchandise (shirts, totes, hats, keychains) and digital platforms (website, promotional videos, motion bumpers). Each iteration refined how the patterned system responded to different formats, testing its adaptability and impact.

Concept

Concept

At its core, BUMPIN’25 visualizes music as both grounding and transformative—musically exciting but visually calm. By translating sound vibrations into graphic patterns, the identity reflects how pop music of the 2010s gave young people both release and resilience in the wake of the Great Recession.
